What is the new Google update to change email address?

Last week Google announced a new update; users will now be able to change their email address. Long awaited, and celebrated since their announcement, this new update means users can change their email address without losing historical data. Keep your emails and everything else, you won’t need to set up any email forwards to make sure you still receive emails.

How does the Google email change update work?

Usually when you want to change your email address, you have to create a new one and then set up forwards manually to ensure any new emails go to the right place. This can be hit and miss, especially if you don’t have much technical know-how. Now, with the update, that won’t be necessary. It is now treated like a username change, where everything remains the same, and emails are still received. Outbound emails will be sent from your new address. This is great if you’re a business and want to update your name, or if you’re stuck with a personal email you created as a much younger, more free-spirited version of yourself!

What are the rules for changing your Gmail?

The update hasn’t rolled out just yet, though Google has advised that there will be some limitations to the change of email address. There is a lifetime limit of three changes, and each change must be over 12-months apart.

  • The old email address will be set as an alias. Learn more about alias email addresses .
  • Both your old and new email addresses will recieve emails.
  • Data will not be affected or lost – photos, messages, and emails will remain.
  • You can still use your old Google Account email address.
  • You can’t delete your new email address.
  • You can sign in to Google services (Google Drive, YouTube, Google Play, Gmail, Maps) with either email address.

How to change your Gmail address

Google haven’t yet announced when this will be rolled out in the UK (we’ll update when we know!) and for now, we don’t have detailed instructions on how to change your gmail address. Other sources suggest this will be managed in your account settings under the ’email’ option, where there will be space for you to add a new email address and confirm your switchover. When Google provide instructions, we’ll update this page.
